Leather lace is used to braid the edges of products. If you want to use lace on the edges of products, you need to decide what kind of leather the lace will be, whether you are ready to cut it yourself or buy, choose the color of the skin or the braid itself. The lace can be made of leatherette, pressed leather or natural.
Leatherette – the cheapest and short-lived option. It can be used for experiments.
For quality products it is better not to use.
Pressed leather is an inexpensive substitute for natural leather. It is not so strong, but its strength is uniform throughout its length. It is suitable for products that do not have high quality requirements. Another plus – it has no joints (at least high-quality pressed leather SHOULD NOT have joints).
The quality and properties of genuine leather depend on the animals from which it is made. The best ribbons are made of kangaroo leather. Their skin is three times stronger than cow’s, at the same thickness. And without loss of softness and flexibility. If you need a lace of maximum quality and reliability, then use a kangaroo.
Tape from the skin of calves are used more often. They are great for all kinds of laces, not as expensive as kangaroos and more affordable.
Goat skin. Well suited for laces. It is soft and durable. One drawback – because of the small size of the skins is difficult to get a large length of tape (but you can use cutting in a circle).
Pig leather for belts is rarely used. It is not strong and stretches strongly. Nevertheless, it can be done, for example, Venetian weaving. It uses a wide band, which may well be pork. With careful cutting and weaving the end result can be quite satisfactory.
On sale there is a large range of finished tapes. Make a choice based on availability, price and
quality. Finished tapes are more expensive than the leather in the plates, but they are immediately ready to work. Their purchase will save you a lot of time and allow you to get a great result without suffering from cutting. When buying, pay attention to the quality. Choose a supplier from whom you can buy the highest quality (and preferably inexpensive) tapes.
First, check for joints. It is advisable to avoid it altogether. Pass the entire coil between your fingers. Valid up to 2-3 quality of joints in the coil. Such joints may not be visible to the eye, are detected by light thickening to the touch. Rough joints are very noticeable and can be an unpleasant surprise if you do not find them before the start of work.
Secondly, the tape should be checked for loose seats. Genuine leather has a non-uniform strength along its surface. Lightness sites give in the tape “slack”. At this point, the skin may stretch out or even tear at the most inopportune moment. To check for slack, clamp the rod (wooden or plastic), about 1 cm thick in a Vice, wrap once with tape and evenly stretch it. You will immediately notice weaknesses.
Tapes are sold in skeins or coils. In skeins reeled tape when they sell them in running meters (or yards). In coils sold tape of a certain length. Usually 20, 25 or 50 meters (or yards – 1 yard = 0.9 m). Always pay attention to the length of the tape in the coil and the units! And as it is sold – linear meters or just skeins/coils.
The finished tape have a standard width. For these values, punches are also produced. The three most common values are 2.5 mm (3/32”), 3 mm (1/8”) and 4 mm (5/32”). Of course, the hole made by the punch 4 mm, you can skip the tape of any width up to 4 mm (or wider). But it is more convenient to use the corresponding punches and tapes.
